Why this guidance is here / Por qué esta guía

The plan separates hair-shaft care from scalp or follicle concerns. Cosmetic products can improve slip, feel, and manageability; they cannot diagnose a cause, restore a destroyed follicle, or permanently fuse a split fiber.

Hair care and breakage

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends cleansing the scalp, conditioning after washing, gentle detangling, and limiting heat. A controlled hair-tress study found bleaching increased short- and long-segment breakage while conditioner reduced both types of breakage. That supports gentler handling and conditioning, but lab tresses do not predict every individual result. AAD guidance · Robbins & Kamath, 2007

Chemical straightening and scalp safety

A dermatology review identified reported hair-shaft changes and scalp effects from chemical straighteners in the literature. The page therefore advises against overlapping services on fragile hair and escalates pain, burns, sores, or persistent irritation rather than telling customers to treat those problems with retail products. 2022 dermatology review

Tension, extensions, and hairline thinning

Repeated pulling from tight braids, ponytails, buns, weaves, or extensions can cause traction alopecia; early changes may be reversible, while prolonged follicle damage can become permanent. The AAD recommends loosening painful styles and seeking dermatology guidance for thinning edges or ongoing loss. AAD traction guidance · Balazic et al., 2023 clinical review

Natural remedies: what is supported / Remedios naturales: qué se apoya

Plain coconut oil is one of the few at-home options with hair-fiber evidence: a controlled study found it reduced protein loss when used before and after washing. That supports a possible pre-shampoo option for the lengths and ends, not treatment of scalp disease, follicle regrowth, or split ends. A single 2015 rosemary-oil comparison is not enough to present rosemary as a cure for hair loss, and this tool never substitutes it for medical evaluation or proven treatment. Avoid lemon, vinegar, baking soda, onion or garlic juice, and undiluted essential oils on the scalp because irritation can worsen a problem. Coconut-oil hair-fiber study · 2015 rosemary-oil study

What the tool cannot tell you

It cannot distinguish dandruff from psoriasis, dermatitis, infection, alopecia areata, scarring alopecia, medication-related shedding, or another medical cause. A dermatologist may need an examination and, when appropriate, testing. Do not stop prescribed medication because of hair shedding without speaking with the prescriber. AAD hair-loss resource center
